Since 1996, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system has actively supported the development of high quality charter schools in Chicago.  Chicago’s 17 charter schools are growing steadily and now serve over 10,000 students at more than 23 school campuses.  The schools have a record of strong academic performance.

 

The Director of the Charter Schools Office is directly or indirectly responsible for all elements of the system’s relationship to Chicago’s charter schools.  The Director manages a staff of three, reports to the Chief of the New Schools Development Department, and works closely with other Department staff.

 

The Director must work successfully with the charter schools, other CPS departments, CPS schools, parents, the media, elected officials and other external education support organizations.

 

Responsibilities

·         Serve as a resource for organizations interested in starting a charter school;

·         Manage the annual evaluation of proposals for new charter schools;

·         Manage the contract execution and Illinois State Board of Education certification processes;

·         Monitor and enforce charter school compliance with all relevant local, state and federal laws and codes;

·         Monitor the schools’ financial status through quarterly reports and annually review school audit reports;

·         Ensure proper payment and provision of certain CPS services to charter schools;

·         Manage the production of the Office’s annual Charter School Performance Report;

·         Answer parent inquiries and resolve parent and student disciplinary disputes;

·         Regularly visit charter schools;

·         Represent the district on charter school issues with print and broadcast media and with elected officials;

·         Work co-operatively with education and civic organizations to sponsor workshops and provide educational and financial technical assistance to charter schools and charter school applicants.

 

Qualifications

·     Strong communication and interpersonal skills;

·     Experience resolving administrative issues in a large, complex organization;

·     Familiarity with the principles of charter school policy;

·     Managerial experience is highly desired. 

·     Education experience is desired but not required
